Youth SoccerCoaching a youth soccer team can be a demanding commitment. Dealing with the players and their parents may be stressful. Teaching children a new sport, however, can also be one of the most fun and rewarding activities in your week. Consider these tips for coaching youth soccer.
Stay Positive
It is important to keep a positive attitude and tone when you are coaching youth soccer, especially if your team is made of young children. Do not yell at the players (or their parents) when they make a mistake. Let them know the things that they do right.
Be a Role Model
Children who are learning to play soccer for the first time will follow your lead. If you set a positive example of how to treat the other team and the referee, you will develop good sportsmanship among your team. Do not criticize the ref in front of your team and do not cheer when the other team makes a mistake. Shake hands with the opposing team at the end of the match.
Focus on Basics
While the flashy plays might look great, dribbling, passing, and shielding are the three key elements for a soccer player to learn. If your players can keep the ball away from the other team, they will have a better chance of winning the game. Make sure every practice session includes drills on these three skills.
Have Everyone Participate
In soccer practices, especially if there is a scrimmage, the lesser gifted players may see less play time as the better players hog the ball. Make sure to organize drills that allow everyone to play. Find ways to turn drills into fun games if the children are young.
Keep it Fun
The most important aspect of a youth soccer game or practice is that the kids have fun. Soccer is a great game and should not be a source of stress on the kids. Make sure they are having a great time while they are learning and challenging themselves.
