Soccer GearOverview
If your child loves soccer, then give him a treat by decorating his room with a soccer theme! From the ceiling to the floor, there are many things you can do to make your child's room all soccer, all the time. Choose black-and-white accessories, add a dash of green (after all, a soccer pitch is usually green) and throw in a pinch of the unexpected for a room that is sure to delight even the biggest soccer fan.
The Walls
The first step in decorating a soccer-themed bedroom is to consider what you want to put on the walls, and this includes paint. Soccer features bold, bright colors and patterns, so it's best to stick to the simple when you are choosing a paint color. Try leaving the walls white, but painting any molding around the windowsills and doors a glossy black. In addition, you could place a chair rail one-third of the way up the wall and paint that black as well. The sharp, black lines of the molding and chair rail will look great in a soccer-themed room. Above the chair rail, consider placing soccer decals made especially for walls, or stenciling out your own soccer balls and filling them in with paint. See the Resources section for a place to purchase soccer wall decals.
The Textiles
Next, think about the window treatments and bedding. While you can purchase bedding and curtains that have a soccer theme, you can also make your own or go with something a bit more simple. To make your own curtains, purchase simple white or black curtain panels, then sew a strip of fabric across the bottom of them, about 12 inches tall. You can find many soccer-patterned fabrics at almost any fabric store.
Bedding can be kept simple or you can go all out by purchasing a soccer-themed set with matching pillowcases and dust ruffle. Because these sets can be rather busy, some people might prefer to stick with a more simple solution. To keep it simple, choose a plain white, green or black comforter set, and purchase some fun soccer pillows (see Resources) to add to the top of the bed. Place a large rug shaped like a soccer ball in the middle of the room to highlight the pillows and window treatments.
The Accessories
Accessories can make or break a room. Display your child's favorite soccer books on top of his bookshelf, and buy a stand for his favorite soccer ball, so he can always find it quickly and easily. Hang some hooks on the wall for your child to hang his uniform. Not only will your child have quick access to the uniform, but it will serve as a decorative touch as well. Consider blowing up a favorite action photo of your child and making it into a poster to hang on the wall. Most photo shops will do this for you for a small fee. Alternately, purchase some posters of your child's favorite soccer team or stars to hang on the wall instead. You can also buy soccer mirrors and clocks to complete the room.
The Whimsical
For a fun, whimsical touch, add some unexpected details to the room. Purchase three small soccer balls (toddler-sized) and hang them from the center of the light fixture at different lengths. Simply use a sturdy needle and fishing line to hang them. Place your child's old cleats on a shelf on the wall, along with a photo of your child performing an awesome move on the soccer field while wearing the cleats. Alternately, hang the cleats from one corner of the curtain rod, if they are not too heavy. If you are especially creative, try painting "grass" all around the bottom of the walls of the room. You could even purchase some outdoor grass (fake grass) and use that as an area rug. Simply have one of the employees at the nearest home-improvement store cut the turf to the size you require.
Special Items
Protect your child's valuable soccer treasures by carefully placing them in a shadowbox and hanging it on the wall. Include favored trophies, metals or even an old uniform. Highlight the box with an art light and hang the box in a place of honor on the wall or above the headboard of the bed. You might even want to make three of these boxes, and hang them in a row above the chair rail on the main wall of your child's room.
