Overview
Soccer coaches in Minnesota must successfully complete a specific training program and background screening. A series of certificate and licensure programs are administered through the Soccer Federation of the United States. The courses are geared to instructing youth ages 4 to 12 years old. A felony record or designated misdemeanor charges will disqualify adults from receiving certification.
Minnesota Soccer Association Licensure
The Minnesota Soccer Association offers a "National Youth License" classification for adults coaching multiple youth age levels. A multiple-day instruction course includes a videotaped instruction session. The potential coaches review the tape with course instructors to master the necessary coaching skills. Coaching candidates will participate in training sessions both on the field and in the classroom. After the completion of the 6-day course, coaches are required to pass a test. The tuition for the course is $300.
Level D Soccer Coaching Licensure
A "Level D" coaching certificate is earned after the successful completion of a 30-hour course and 6 hours of interactive testing. Tuition for this Minnesota coaching course is $300. Coaches may also upgrade from Level D state licensure to a National License designation. They may take this course for an additional $40 fee.
Level E Soccer Coaching Licensure
Coaches can earn a "Level E" certification designation by participating in an 18-hour course for a fee of $150. Registration with the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association is also required for admission to the course. This class consists of 3 hours of interactive testing and a 15-hour classroom component. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate in the training. Course curriculum focuses on the mental, physical and tactical skills required to play the game of soccer.
Goalkeeping Institute Certification
Coaches can attend the Goalkeeping Institute and earn 6 hours of state continuing education credits and 8 hours of regional extended education in the field of coaching credits. The course offers instruction in a classroom setting and practical application on the soccer field. A course fee of $50 is charged to participate. The regional certificate offers a more in-depth look at the art of goalkeeping and requires a $75 registration fee. A national-level certificate is being developed.
Special Topic Soccer Coaching Diplomas
Special topic classes for coaches are also available from the National Youth Soccer Association. A National Youth Diploma Course requires a 21-hour and 3-day commitment from participants. The course focuses on improving practice organization skills, instruction technique, and team management. A course fee of $180 is charged per participant.
